I have been involved with DECA for more than 15 years as a student, employee of DECA Inc., and as an advisor, but even with this experience I feel like I am behind when it comes to keeping my students on the cutting edge of DECA competition. Please share with me what you do with your students in terms of the following areas:
- Role-Play/Case Study Prep
- Test Prep
- Written Event Prep
- How do you get kids to write the manuals?
I wanted to post this because we can all learn from each other and hopefully see each other in Anaheim when our kids are competing for top honors.

I, too, have been involved with DECA for many years, BUT, I really don't have any special methods for preparation. The basics of practicing ALOT with previous tests and using MarkED LAPS has worked. For role plays, I have my members try to do as many role plays as they can in as many different instructional areas as possible to be ready for whatever they get at districts/state. Using Alumni to help judge when they can come and help, seems to help with role plays. That would be about it for now. Maybe something else will come to me later.
I've incorporated DECA into the curriculum with my classes. For testing and role plays we have DECA day usually once a cycle. In class the students will take a practice test, then go through and answer the questions. Afterwards they will review the answers and write questions/notes on the ones they go wrong. Then I will sit down with each individual group/individual and explain the answers with them. Of course this take place over several classes, but with so much time between the start of school and Districts, the students get a ton done.
